UN Chief urges positive change for Imran Khan

English , International - بین الاقوامی , Snippets , / Wednesday, July 3rd, 2024

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres wishes to see an improvement in PTI founder Imran Khan’s situation, as stated by his spokesperson. Imran is currently imprisoned in Adiala Jail for the Iddat case, despite his acquittal in the cipher case and suspension of sentences in two Toshakhana cases by the Islamabad High Court.

The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention declared the charges against Imran as baseless and politically motivated, advocating for his release and compensation. This follows a US resolution calling for an investigation into the February 8 election irregularities, marking the second international criticism of the actions against Imran within a week.

The Pakistani government and its allies dismissed the UN working group’s recommendations, labeling them a conspiracy against national institutions. In a press conference, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric clarified that the UN chief supports a positive evolution of Mr. Khan’s situation but refrained from explicitly endorsing the panel’s recommendation for immediate release
