United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday announced plans to convene another enlarged meeting on the Cyprus issue after discussions with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman.
Guterres said the meeting would be held after sufficient progress is achieved on confidence-building measures, the methodology of talks and key issues related to negotiations.
He did not announce a specific date but said there was consensus among the two sides and the three guarantor powers, Greece, Türkiye and the United Kingdom, that another enlarged meeting should take place.
The UN chief stressed that proper preparation was necessary to ensure the meeting produces meaningful results and does not end without progress.
Guterres arrived in Cyprus on Monday for his first visit to the island since becoming UN secretary-general. It was the first visit by a sitting UN chief to Cyprus since Ban Ki-moon’s visit in 2010.
Cyprus has remained divided since 1974 following a coup by Greek army officers and subsequent Turkish military intervention. UN-backed reunification talks collapsed in Switzerland in 2017 and have remained stalled.
An informal UN-hosted meeting in Geneva in March 2025 resulted in agreement on several confidence-building measures, creating hopes for renewed diplomatic efforts.
