BEIRUT, July 27: UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has expressed grave concern over the humanitarian impact of Israeli military operations in Lebanon, saying documented violations of international humanitarian law may amount to war crimes.
Speaking at a press conference in Beirut following a four day official visit, Türk said the UN Human Rights Office had recorded large scale violations during the conflict. He said continued airstrikes, shelling and the use of explosive weapons in densely populated areas had resulted in heavy civilian casualties, widespread destruction and large scale displacement.
According to a statement issued by the UN Information Center, an independent and impartial assessment mission has begun collecting information and evidence on alleged violations committed by all parties to the conflict since March 2.
Citing Lebanese authorities, Türk said more than 4,300 people have been killed and over 12,200 injured since March 2. The casualties include more than 135 healthcare workers as well as numerous journalists and media personnel.
He reiterated the need for accountability and stressed the importance of protecting civilians and ensuring compliance with international humanitarian law during the ongoing conflict.
