The UN human rights office has expressed deep concern over the increasing civilian toll from long-range attacks in Ukraine and Russia, calling for an immediate halt to strikes targeting residential areas and civilian infrastructure.
UN Human Rights Office spokesperson Thameen Al-Kheetan said the scale and intensity of recent attacks affecting civilians were alarming and must stop. He stressed that civilians and civilian facilities are protected under international humanitarian law and deliberate attacks against them constitute war crimes.
Al-Kheetan said recent days had witnessed multiple deadly incidents in both countries. He noted that Kyiv was hit in what Ukrainian authorities described as the largest missile attack on the capital since the war began, leaving one person dead and 20 others injured.
He also referred to reported attacks in Zaporizhzhia and near Kharkiv that killed seven civilians, including a child, and injured many others. A missile strike on a merchant vessel near Odesa reportedly killed 10 people and injured seven.
The UN official further cited Russian reports that Ukrainian drone attacks on logistics centres in Moscow and Tambov regions killed eight civilians and injured 86 others.
The UN urged all parties to respect international law and protect civilian lives.
