A US official has said Washington and Tehran have agreed in principle on a preliminary framework to reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for Iran’s commitment to dispose of its highly enriched uranium, according to US media citing The New York Times.
The official said the agreement has not been signed and remains subject to approval by US President Donald Trump and Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. The disposal mechanism for Iran’s enriched uranium is still under negotiation.
The proposal does not address Iran’s missile programme and does not include suspension of uranium enrichment. These issues are expected in later talks.
The official told Fox News that Washington could consider “significant accommodations” on sanctions relief if Tehran agrees to steps on its nuclear stockpile, saying the US aims to address all enriched material held by Iran.
He rejected any “tolling mechanism” for the Strait of Hormuz, saying it had not been proposed and would not be acceptable.
CBS News reported the framework is viewed by the administration as stronger than the 2015 nuclear deal under former US President Barack Obama, which allowed limited enrichment.
Under the proposed arrangement, the US would lift restrictions on vessels entering and leaving Iranian ports, with US Central Command and Gulf partners coordinating safe passage. The official stressed this should not be seen as a toll system.
The official said US Vice President JD Vance, Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner are involved in the talks.
