The White House announced that US Vice President JD Vance will not depart for Switzerland on Thursday as logistical arrangements for anticipated technical talks with Iran remain unresolved.
A White House spokesperson said the US delegation remains prepared to travel at the earliest opportunity but noted that organizing the negotiations has proven complex and unpredictable. The spokesperson added that Washington is eager to begin technical discussions with Tehran as soon as possible.
Earlier in the day, Vance told reporters that he still intends to travel to Switzerland and expects the technical talks could begin over the weekend. However, he acknowledged that scheduling remains uncertain due to ongoing logistical challenges surrounding the negotiations.
Meanwhile, Switzerland’s Foreign Ministry announced that talks scheduled for Friday at Bürgenstock in the canton of Nidwalden had been cancelled, according to local media reports.
The planned negotiations follow the electronic signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday evening. The agreement is intended to create a framework for ending hostilities between Washington, Tel Aviv and Tehran.
Under the memorandum, the United States and Iran are expected to hold negotiations for 60 days, with the option of an extension, focusing on Iran’s nuclear program and international sanctions.
