Two senior US Republican lawmakers have raised concerns over the Pentagon’s decision to reduce around 5,000 American troops stationed in Germany, warning the move could weaken deterrence and send the wrong signal to Russia.
Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker and House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers said the troops should instead be repositioned further east to strengthen NATO’s defensive posture.
A Pentagon spokesperson stated the decision followed a comprehensive review of operational requirements and conditions on the ground. President Donald Trump indicated that additional reductions could be considered, though no further details were provided.
Germany’s Defence Minister Boris Pistorius described the move as “foreseeable,” while emphasizing that the continued presence of US forces in Europe remains important for both sides.
NATO has sought clarification from Washington regarding the planned adjustments.
Meanwhile, Democratic Congressman Adam Smith criticized the decision, calling it inconsistent with broader US security strategy. However, Republican Congressman Clay Higgins expressed support for the move.
The United States currently maintains more than 36,000 active-duty troops in Germany.
