KYIV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Wednesday that Kyiv hopes to resume “meaningful” trilateral peace talks with Russia in the coming weeks following “good contacts” between Ukrainian and United States officials, Xinhua reported.
In his evening Telegram address, Zelenskyy said Ukraine expects the Russian side “will not hide” from negotiations and emphasized readiness for renewed diplomatic engagement. He added that involving European partners is essential for a constructive outcome.
“If we can return to meaningful trilateral communication in these weeks and involve the Europeans, that will be the right result,” he said, noting Ukraine is prepared to take necessary steps if partners and Russia respond positively.
Zelenskyy also accused Russia of considering military scenarios in northern Ukraine along the Chernihiv-Kyiv direction from Belarus. He said Ukraine is strengthening defenses and taking preventive measures regarding Belarus and border regions.
He warned Belarus of “significant” consequences if it becomes directly involved in the conflict, reiterating escalation concerns.
The Ukrainian president said Ukraine’s long-range operations were producing results, adding key targets included Russian oil refineries, storage facilities, and energy infrastructure. He stated Kyiv’s May objectives were being met “more or less fully,” citing a strike on facilities in Kstovo, about 800 kilometers from Ukraine’s border, Xinhua reported.
