LONDON – Zeynep Sonmez has etched her name in Turkish tennis history by becoming the first player from Turkey to reach the third round at Wimbledon, marking a major milestone in her career and for the nation.
On Thursday, the 23-year-old defeated China’s Xinyu Wang in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5, at the All England Club. The victory not only sent her into the third round of the prestigious tournament but also ended a 75-year wait for Turkey at a grand slam singles event. The last Turkish player to reach the third round at a major was Bahtiye Musluoğlu at the French Open in 1950.
Sonmez’s next opponent will be decided between Suzan Lamens of the Netherlands, ranked 69th in the world, and Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova, currently world No. 17.
Wimbledon, one of tennis’ four grand slam events alongside the Australian Open, Roland Garros, and the US Open, is being held from June 30 to July 13. The women’s final is scheduled for July 12, followed by the men’s final on July 13.
Sonmez’s breakthrough marks a proud moment for Turkish sports, inspiring a new generation of players.
