US President Donald Trump said Wednesday the agreement announced with Iran remains a “Memorandum of Understanding” and is not a final deal, warning it could still change.
Speaking to reporters during a meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France, Trump said the United States could resume military action if Tehran fails to comply.
“If I don’t like it, we’ll go back to shooting at them,” Trump said, adding Washington could return to “dropping bombs” if Iranian leaders “don’t behave.”
Trump confirmed Washington and Tehran reached a temporary truce in April through Pakistani mediation, followed by a framework agreement announced earlier this week. He said the accord is expected to be formally signed in Switzerland on Friday.
He stressed the deal aims to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, calling it “very strong” and “the right direction.”
Trump also dismissed reports of a $300 billion development fund for Iran involving US taxpayer money, calling it “false.” He said the United States is not investing “10 cents,” and any external investment would depend on Iran’s future conduct.
On global markets, Trump said oil prices have declined following de-escalation, while noting the Strait of Hormuz is “already partially opened” and expected to be fully operational soon.
He further described the Memorandum of Understanding as detailed and effective, saying Iran is “ready to make a deal,” but warned the process could restart if commitments are not met.
