MIRPUR (AJK), Sept. 24 — Azad Jammu and Kashmir Prime Minister Barrister Iftikhar Gillani on Thursday congratulated Dr Muhammad Najeeb Naqi on his election as AJK President, describing it as a “good omen” for the region and a matter of pride for the people of Poonch.
Addressing the AJK Legislative Assembly, the prime minister said the election of a “son of Poonch” as president was a “breath of fresh air.” He praised Dr Najeeb Naqi and his family for their longstanding services to the people of Poonch and Azad Kashmir, saying that no one understood the issues of Azad Jammu and Kashmir better than Dr Naqi.
PM Gillani thanked PML-N President Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs Amir Muqam, Rana Sanaullah, Tariq Fazal Chaudhry and the parliamentary party for their support and cooperation.
Reiterating his government’s commitment to an inclusive political approach, he said the opposition would be taken on board on matters of vital national interest and no one would be subjected to political victimisation. He also stressed that the sanctity and dignity of the Legislative Assembly would be maintained and strengthened.
The prime minister said the government was preparing a comprehensive policy for the construction and development of Azad Kashmir. He regretted that elections had not yet been held in seven Poonch constituencies, saying the Assembly would remain incomplete until the electoral process was completed. He expressed hope that the polls would be held soon.
PM Gillani also said no transfers had so far been made by the government and officials appointed during the previous administration continued to serve.
Referring to the education package, he said objections had been raised over it and a committee had been constituted to examine the matter. He reiterated his government’s resolve to work with the opposition for the development of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
