US Midterm Results May Reshape Trump’s Foreign Policy

WASHINGTON, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) – The Democrats’ victory in the US midterm elections could strengthen their ability to challenge President Donald Trump’s foreign policies, although their influence remains limited by presidential powers and political divisions.

Democrats are expected to increase scrutiny of Trump’s military actions against Iran, seek changes to some tariffs and push for stronger US support for Ukraine.

On Iran, lawmakers could use war powers resolutions and control over federal spending to pressure the administration to limit or end military operations. However, Trump’s authority as commander-in-chief and veto powers could make such efforts difficult.

On trade, Democrats may seek legislation to reverse some tariffs and increase oversight of the administration’s trade policies. Any legislative changes could face presidential opposition.

The election outcome has also raised hopes among some European leaders for stronger US support for Ukraine and closer transatlantic cooperation.

However, European officials and security experts remain cautious, warning that political divisions in Washington and Trump’s executive authority could limit changes in US foreign policy.
