Doha meeting an opportunity to exchange experiences:

Mrs. Maryam bint Abdullah Al-Attiyah, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee Qatar (NHRC) has said that collective efforts and measures are must in order to preserve the rights of vulnerable groups. She hoped that two day international conference on ‘Climate Change and Human Rights’ starting on Tuesday in Doha will come up with inspiring practical recommendations and suggestions for countries and actors. In a statement issued pre-event, Mrs Attiyah said that this is an opportunity to exchange experiences and to learn from the rich experiences. International cooperation is necessary to address the affects of the climate change on human rights.
A two day international conference ‘Climate Change and Human Rights’ will take place in Doha from 21-22 February at Le Royal Meridien Hotel, Lusail City. It is organized by National Human Rights Committee of Qatar in cooperation with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR); United Nations Development Program (UNDP); League of Arab States; and Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI). 600 delegates, 270 from outside Qatar and 330 from within Qatar will be participating in the two day conference. There will be 6 main sessions with 12 subtopics, 2 meetings and 7 open discussions with the aim of enhancing access to inspiring practical results, recommendations and suggestions for states and actors to reduce the impact of climate change on human rights. The opening session of the conference includes 6 keynote speeches by heads and leaders of the participating entities, followed by three sessions on first day. First session include 1) Climate Change and Human Rights: Impacts and Obligations, 2) Second session is on the Efforts of the State of Qatar as a key player in the process of environmental protection and its plans to move forward in cooperation with stakeholders. 3) Third session will discuss the role of the United Nations and human rights mechanisms in advancing rights-based climate action. The first day will conclude with a drafting committee meeting.
The second day of the conference will be covering discussions among three main working groups. Each group has 4 sub-topics, including working papers rich in information and scientific research on the experiences of national institutions. It will be followed by fourth session and the drafting committee meeting. Concluding session of the two day conference covers release of the conference statement and recommendations. At the end, representatives of the organizers of the conference will be presenting the results and recommendations of the two day meetings and the recommended action plan at a press conference. Chairperson NHRC Qatar, Mrs. Maryam bint Abdullah Al-Attiyah reminded that Paris Agreement stipulates the responsibility of states and their human rights obligations with regard to climate change, which includes preventing expected damages, by mitigating the effects of climate change and preventing its negative effects, ensuring that all people have the necessary ability to adapt to climate change, and ensuring accountability and fairness. effective action against climate change damage to human rights, and mobilize maximum funds.
