BOLOGNA, Italy: A demonstration was scheduled in the northern Italian city of Bologna on Monday after the death of a 42-year-old Moroccan man during a police arrest sparked public concern and calls for a full investigation.
Abderrahim Fakir died on Sunday while police officers were restraining him on the ground as they attempted to handcuff him. A video recorded by a local resident reportedly showed Fakir shouting for help and asking officers to stop before he lost consciousness.
According to preliminary information, police were called after Fakir allegedly experienced a psychiatric crisis, disturbed public order, and behaved erratically. Officers reportedly tried to calm him before using pepper spray and restraining his hands and ankles.
Bologna Mayor Matteo Lepore announced the demonstration, saying the circumstances surrounding the incident must be fully clarified. Barbara Spinelli, a lawyer assisting Fakir with the renewal of his residence permit, described him as a kind, respectful man who had legally lived in Italy since childhood and feared deportation.
Bologna prosecutors launched proceedings under the recently introduced Model 45 bis procedure to determine the exact circumstances and cause of Fakir’s death. Authorities said the legal mechanism allows preliminary inquiries before deciding whether a formal criminal investigation is required.
